Illinois Central College (ICC), in cooperation with local high schools, offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to learn about careers in Health Care and qualify to take the State Exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
This is a great opportunity to earn a college certificate while still in high school. Work-based learning, dual credit classes meet from 7am to 10am Monday through Friday in Peoria, Pekin, or Eureka. If selected to participated, all students will be required to provide their own transportation. Students will exit this program with eligibility to sit for the Nursing Assistant State Exam, CPR Certification, and 7.5 college credits. Any student interested in a career in health care is encouraged to apply. Applications are available with your guidance counselor. Deadline for applications is January 31, 2019. Once applications are screened, students may be scheduled for an interview. Selection for this program is based on availability and high school attendance record. Seniors may be given preference over juniors. The purpose of this program is to promote growth and help students identify areas of career interest. The student will be assigned a department based on interest and selection process. Once placed in a department the student will go through a 9-12 week program that will have them working in different positions of the department to show them what a career progression might look like at UnityPoint Health. They will also assist in project work and daily tasks as assigned.

Illinois Central College will host a Health Careers Exploration Fair for potential students to explore its state-of-the-art facilities and career program options on Mon., Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the ICC Peoria Campus, located at 5407 N. University St., Peoria. Registration begins at 5 pm in Cedar Hall. The event is free and open to the public. High school students and their parents, as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about health careers, are encouraged to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from faculty and program directors from ICC Health Careers disciplines, including dental hygienist, emergency medical technician, licensed practical nurse, massage therapist, medical assistant, medical coder, medical lab technician, medical office administrative assistant, nursing assistant, occupational therapy assistant, paramedic, phlebotomist, physical therapist assistant, radiographer, registered nurse, respiratory therapist, and surgical technologist. Hosted tours of both classrooms and state-of-the-art lab spaces will be available. ICC Health Careers programs feature the latest technology and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Students enrolled in health careers programs at ICC have the opportunity to experience classroom, hands-on and onsite lab experiences, as well as clinical partnerships with the area’s leading health care employers. Graduates may earn credential after one semester, an academic certificate or two year college degree, to enter into the workforce. There are immediate jobs and projected positions available for each of these disciplines listed above.
